Generating Creative Writing Topics
One of the most difficult things about writing is finding what you want to write about. Generating creative writing topics can be difficult, hence the term writer's block. However it is not insurmountable. There are all kinds of resources that can help you get the creative juices flowing and figure out what you want to write about. Creative writing can be fiction or nonfiction, so your choices are nearly unlimited. This is the first decision to make, do you want to make up a story or write about something factual? Most writers know the answer immediately.
Regardless of whether you are writing fiction or nonfiction, every project starts with an idea. Some experts say write about what you know. This might mean writing your memoirs or an essay about your summer vacation. Or creating a fictional story that pulls certain aspects from true experiences. For example, if you are a history buff with a romantic streak, writing historical romance is a no-brainer. There are even online resources to help you generate ideas and books that provide hooks and starters to help you get writing.
Make a list of things that interest you. If you are writing about something that you have no interest in, it is unlikely to be a very compelling piece of literary art. Once you have identified subjects that you find compelling, you can narrow them down and even combine them to create the perfect idea for you. Brainstorming and freewriting are two techniques that many writers use, which involves jotting down the first things that come to mind without thinking too hard, then reviewing what you wrote and extracting the gold, so to speak.
The list of creative writing topics is unlimited. It truly is, there are so many things a person can write about creatively. As mentioned before, nonfiction can even be creative. With so many fiction and nonfiction topics you will certainly find one that appeals to you. While the works of other writers can be very inspiring and even help you pin down a topic, be careful not to plagiarize as this is a major sin in the writing world. Even if you write about something that's already been written about, you must put your own original touch on your work to distinguish it from other works on the same subject or in the same genre.
