Journey Into Creative Fiction Writing

If you have an wild imagination and creativity, ask yourself do you also have a thirst to express yourself. Whether you wield a pen or play the keyboard, creative fiction writing might be interesting for you. You can start as a hobby or even progress towards career. Many writers knew from their early years that this was their most burning interest. Whether or not you fit into this category doesn't matter, as majority discovered this passion for creative writing later in their adult years. If you are a hobbyist writer, you may be reluctant to attend workshops or take classes. But if you want to make your writing a career, some kind of formal education is recommended.

Main reason for education is that many writers with brilliant ideas are less skilled at constructing their ideas into a connected and readable story or book. Writers must need to study structure, dialogue, pacing and character development, but should not forget basic grammar, before they can start turning their ideas into masterpieces. For example, many publishers and agents disapprove passive voice in fiction writing. While passive voice dialogues are not an error and can work better in many cases, still, active voice is preferred in most common cases. Reader can recognize passive voice use by indicators such as has been and was. With help of right instructor, you can learn when to use passive voice and when to rather avoid it.

There is an unwritten rule, that with creative writing fiction active voice is usually preferred most of the time. To put together a story or book, there is much to learn before. Not only you need to come up with a great story, you also need to form the characters and connect all the dots into whole that is interesting and believable. If a story moves too quickly, important details may be skipped, but if it moves too slowly the reader might get bored. And bored reader will just close the book and never buy your work again. There are many different genres of fiction. These include romance, science fiction, horror, mystery and many more.

When you are starting creative fiction writing, it might be good to play around with different genres until you find one that suits you best, where you feel most at home. Some people are simply good only within a certain genre. And here is a proof that you will most likely agree with - for example take Steven King. Can you imagine him writing romances? Or, vice-versa - can you imagine Danielle Steele writing horror? You will sooner or later find an area, where you shine, where you feel comfortable. And this is area, where you should focus your study on. Another piece of advice from years of experience - writers of both fiction and nonfiction must have a thick skin, as rejections and criticism is a part of the job. You should be able to take both, rejection and criticism as a normal feedback, a part of learning experience, rather than a devastating blow to your morale and self-esteem. All writers went through a long line of rejections, before their work was finally accepted.
