Creative Writing Degree: Is It Really Necessary?
For those who are passionate about writing, you do not need to earn a creative writing degree to pursue your dreams. Your years of writing experience have turned you into the expert needed in your craft. These two can stand on its own to prove your writing prowess. Although, it is also important to note that you may have to compete with those writers who have completed a writing degree in their undergrad years or post-graduate namely those with BA Journalism, Communication and MFA Creative Writing degrees.
If you want to prove yourself as a writer, apart from your long years of writing practice, you can also catch up with those available writing workshops, short courses or fellowship programs offered by universities. But if you opt to spend another four years in the university to earn the creative writing degree, then good for you because not many are blessed with time.
Online creative writing degrees are also offered. You can either do the entire program online or undergo the low-residency MFA in Creative Writing offered in some universities. This is a combination of online and face-to-face instruction. Writers are actually invited to spend, maybe at least a week, to undergo the fellowship in a writing conducive area, say a vineyard, an estate, or a mountain house. Here you get to bond with the other writers, share writing trade secrets, discuss in depth forms and style and so on. Once you are done with this fellowship, the work online begins. Each group of writers maybe assigned a teacher who is a known literary author to comment on the students' write-ups and share suggestions and tips on how to make their writing better.
For those who are thinking of really spending time earning a creative writing degree, you can enroll in a Bachelor Degree in Creative Writing or a Master's in Fine Arts Major in Creative Writing depending on what you have already accomplished thus far. These types of programs teaches the techniques and processes of writing an original composition in various literary formats such as the poetry, novel, short stories and others. This will also include learning editorial and technical skills, criticism and how to market your final draft manuscripts to publishers.
In Fine Arts-based writing degrees, the focus will be primarily on the creative side such as mastering the craft of poetry, prose, fiction and non-fiction.
These creative writing degrees are usually done using small classes and one-on-one instruction so that professors can concentrate in honing and improving each writer's style of writing. Aside from this, some of the programs may also include an internship program in a school literary paper or magazine or in the Lifestyle section of a newspaper company.
While it is true that years of writing practice can carry you through your writing career, having a creative writing degree certainly has its advantage. For one, you have an even playing field with those writer who have a writing degree. Secondly, you have an improved writing style because of your formal training. Whichever your route is just bear in mind that the success of your writing career will depend so much on your ability, skills and distinct style as a writer.
